Artists Statement for Randall M Hasson

"In Art, as in love, instinct is enough."   -Anatole France

Randall M. Hasson is an artist with an unusually distinctive style that incorporates calligraphy with illustration into paintings on large canvas. Image and the power of the word resound in his paintings, creating a multi-layered effect that gives the viewer an experience of discovery and exploration. "I want my paintings to have different levels for the viewer to experience, from visual to conceptual, so that one can continually discover new elements as time passes".

The key to Hasson’s paintings is research. "One of my favorite parts of the artistic process is the time spent collecting quotes and text and formulating the images before the painting is ever begun. The study of a subject for which a painting will be developed, and the very act of writing the words about that subject allow me to internalize it and make it my own before beginning." Indeed, as his paintings are finished, the artist writes an article explaining the symbolism behind each work.

In formulating these ideas for his paintings, the composition becomes a key element in advancing the ideas of the image and text. Then these concepts and images and text are pieced together like a puzzle until one cohesive unit is formed. By the time a painting is done, there is a sense of depth and meaning that allow a viewer to return again and again to the painting and see things for the first time.

Randall’s work has appeared in the Los Angeles Society for Calligraphy journal, Calligraph; The Artful Book of Days; "Writing Beyond Words"; Somerset Studio Magazine; and Letter Arts Review. In addition, his artwork and calligraphy have been accepted and received awards in juried exhibitions in a variety of media. He has participated in the Italian street painting festivals in Santa Barbara, California, ("I Maddonnari"), and Miami, Florida ("Feast for the Pallette"). Recent activities include the "Urban Art Trail", a downtown beautification project in San Diego, California, that incorporates permanent Calligraphy on city sidewalks.

Randy has appeared as faculty at three International Lettering Arts conferences: as a co-Lecturer on the "I Madonnari" experience at Discoveries in 1998 at the University of San Diego, CA., as a Lecturer on the "Urban Art Trail" at the PenUltima Conference in 1999, and as a teacher and evening co-presenter at "Calligraphic Odyssey", the 2001 International Calligraphy Conference in Boston, MA. He has also teaches and lectures for local Calligraphy guilds.

Media are mainly acrylic paint and acrylic inks on canvas.

He currently resides in Del Mar, California with his wife Valerie, who’s poetry is the subject for some of his work ("Repentance" and "I Remember"), and daughter Holly.
