Domenico Foschi
I believe Art has
many functions, among which being a vehicle which allows us to explore
our own and
the Universal truth .
An artist also has
the duty to support the statement that beauty has infinite facets
and that light and
acceptance are the necessary ingredients to reveal beauty in everything and in
every aspect of life , as horrible as they may be .
Eyes are
deceiving, truth lies in the heart.
This is my
signature statement in my website.
My photography is
strictly influenced by memories, life experiences. The images are road-
maps to my inner
world , sometime testimonials of a found past , sometime symptoms
of roads yet to
explore .
Although I do use
modern lenses which provide a sharp rendition of the subject, I
prefer to work
mainly with old brass lenses dated around 1860's . These tools, because of their
optical design , help me to achieve mood to my images . Areas out of focus
carry an important weight in my work: they are the equivalent in poetry of
reading between the lines, they open the doors to an unknown imagery , where
shapes, although still being vaguely familiar , challenge and at the same time
lure us to a softer and exciting world .
These tools,
together with the use of large format cameras ( 4 x 5 , 8 x 10 ) , and the
shooting and printing techniques employed, act as filters through which the
image is born .
I challenge myself
in tackling every different portfolio by means of different techniques.
The
motivation for this approach is that I find the world of photography excitingly
vast and getting
stuck in one look or technique would be gimmicky and unchallenging
.

bio
Domenico Foschi
was born in Bari , Italy , in 1962 .
Although always
exploring different kinds of creative media since childhood , he
found that
photography would be what he would stick with for many years to co-
me , after
stealing his brother's camera for a short trip . He was nineteen at the time.
Not being able to
afford a formal education in photography, he started to
study the work of
the masters in books . He found the expressive power of the work
of Alvin
Langdon Coburn , Kertesz , Steichen , Stieglitz , Strand , Sander , Penn .
Avedon , Mapplethorpe and a few others , of pivotal importance to his direction
as a Fine Art photographer . Working in the Sergio Guidetti Studio Fotografico,
he received "hands on " training from wet plate processes , to the use of
large format cameras , to developing and printing techniques .
He then worked as
a freelance commercial photographer in Ravenna, his home-town, shooting
primarily for magazines , newspapers , the City Administration and
political parties
. Soon he realized that commercial photography wasn't going to
allow him to
explore his creativity in a more personal way .
D, F. moved in the
U. S. in 1989. Here he has produced six different portfolios.
ranging from
portraits , to Urban Landscapes , to Still Life to images of cemeteries
statuaries . His commercial work took a direction on his own, mainly by
producing CD
covers for recording artists .
D. F. has won
awards and honorable mentions for his Fine Art work and his images
are in collections
throughout the U, S. as well Europe and Latin America .
