Born in California, Gray has lived most of his life in northern Colorado, where he currently lives and works. He honed many of the creative aspects of his photography while on a seven-month, around-the-world trip that took him backpacking through Egypt, Inda, Nepal, Tibet, and China.
This solo trip was originally planned around the importation of Asian musical instruments, but it quickly transformed into a photographic obsession that far outshined any other professional interests he might have entertained previously. Memories of this trip continue to be an inspiration to the way Gray sees people and light.
As for the technical aspects of imaging, Gray has built up up his expertise over many years through constant, self-guided research and experimentation.
Gray uses a customized b&w archival pigment ink system to print his scanned transparencies. These are "dotless" quadtone prints that equal or surpass the quality of darkroom prints, and he sells them from his site.
