Dear Helyn,

For my orginal abstract slides I use color gells and colored foil reflecting it inot silver or gold foil. Varing distances and crushed surfaces lend to a twisted adn 3D pattern. After scanning the 35mm slides into Adobe Systems Photoshop, I often mix two different slides together while I blend with all the different modes in Photoshop and mask the unwanted areas out. The reverse of one area layer meeting the original layer in the middle of the page creates symmetry. Surrealistic images take shape. I believe my art is created by nature for I can't predict the weird twist of light in my orginal slides. There are hidden pictures in all of my work. Many will see different subject matter than I do or what the title suggests. I believe every blade of grass deserves close scrutiny to see all of the beauty. Sunlight on my mylar foil show the complexity of nature and the final artwork derived from this light requires the same examination to detail.

| Thomas Barbčy |
 |
Thomas Barbčy Artworks, L.L.P. was formed in 1999 by Thomas Barbčy and his wife Suzanne Barbčy, a former model who decided to venture on the other side of the camera. Our inspirations for our work come from many years of traveling all over the world, everyday life and from some of our favorite artists, such as René Magritte, M.C. Escher or Roger Dean. We bring our Mamiya RB 67 or several old Canon AE-1s wherever we go to shoot our photographs. The process of the montage starts with concept. It is then followed by the exposure and selection of the negatives.
The design is then created by carefully choosing printing procedures as combination printing; sandwiching negatives together; thereby printing them simultaneously; pre-planned double exposure in the camera; the re-photographing of collaged photographs; and/or a combination of the above. We finish off the process by touching it up on the computer at the very end.
The pictures can be appreciated without knowledge of their technical virtuosity. Photographers run deep in our family. Now and then we will take old negatives out of the family archives and use them in our work. We hope you appreciate them as much as we do.

| PixiPort's POTM winner is Shirley Cross with her stunning B&W image Enchanted Evening.
Shirley graduated from New York Institute of Photography in November 1991. Her photographs have been published in several magazines and calenders, and have won awards both nationally and internationally. Beginning in 1988 and each year thereafter, her photos have been included in THE BEST OF PHOTOGRAPHY ANNUAL, which is published by PHOTOGRAPHERS FORUM magazine.
For the last three years she has had photos accepted for the Austrian Super Circuit, the largest photo salon in the world. In 1999 she received medals both in Austria and South Africa. Fantasy and futuristic, spacey things fascinate her. At the same time she is an incurable romantic who loves flowers and the wild natural settings. Her latest thrill is using the computer to bring her imagination to life. Shirley enjoys creating art that is pleasurable and uplifting and sometimes amusing.
