The Voice Behind The Lens |

"MOHAMMED'S FIRE, A JURY PARDON AND A PHOTOGRAPH Michael Dubiner The gentleman in this image is Samuel H. Mohammed. I, and some others simply refer to him as Mohammed.
According to newspaper reports he led a diverse life. At one time, he was a linebacker and earned a college degree. In the mid-1990's much of his time was spent philosophising around his neighborhood and in a coin laundry. One day, Mohammed broke into a crack house that was plaguing his neighborhood. Carrying a can of lighter fluid, Mohammed emptied the contents on items strewn about and set the place on fire.

Brian Belefant |
| |
Brian Belefant has had one of his images accepted into the prestigious Artisans 2003 National Juried Exhibition. The show runs from October 7-30 at the Artisans Gallery in Mill Valley.
About ten years ago, I began experimenting with alternative processes-varying everything from exposure to processing to printing. Two years ago, I nailed it. I came upon a combination of techniques that get my photographs to look the way my eye sees. And in the process, I developed an entirely new method of camera filtration.

DAVID LEVINTHAL |
| |
MAJOR ACQUISITION OF WORKS BY ACCLAIMED PHOTOGRAPHER DAVID LEVINTHAL ON VIEW AT BIRMINGHAM MUSEUM OF ART THROUGH DECEMBER 14, 2003 Through December 14, 2003, visitors to the Museum will be able to view a remarkable new acquisition of photographs by internationally-acclaimed artist, David Levinthal. The 29 photographs, all large-format polaroids, span the artist's entire career, from his breakthrough work in Hitler Moves East (1977) to his most recent Barbie series, Girlfriend! The Barbie Sessions by David Levinthal, shown at the BMA in 2000
With this acquisition, the Museum now houses the largest and most comprehensive collection of works by David Levinthal of any public institution. Levinthal's photographs will be on view in the Arrington Gallery on the second floor and is free and open to the public. From the beginning of his career in the early 1970s Levinthal has photographed toys that blur the boundaries between fact and fiction, while tackling such controversial subjects as Nazism, racism, and sexual fantasy. The Wild West, American Beauties, Desire, and Barbie are some of the series - all undertaking subtle social critiques - represented in this group of images. Among these works are some of Levinthal's earliest images, small black and white photographs that pre- date his seminal work with toy soldiers published in the book Hitler Moves East: A Graphic Chronicle, 1941-43 (1977). In addition, there are four unique Polaroid SX-70 photographs from the Modern Romance series, haunting nocturnal images that depict a blurry world of loneliness and lurid encounter.
