"Out of the Darkroom"
The Life and Times of Constance Bannister
1913-2005
May 1, 2008 through May 31, 2008
The Cold Spring Harbor Library in Cold Spring Harbor, New York is proud to present the photography of Constance Bannister, a long time resident of our district.
Born in Ashland, Tennessee, Constance Bannister relocated to New York City in the 1930's. She studied at the School of Modern Photography where she explored her desire for "visualizing in entirety" through photographs. After working for the Associated Press and the Chicago Tribune, taking pictures of socialites, Broadway plays, the New York Ballet, and the Ice Capades, Constance Bannister began to focus on her first love, babies.
"Out of the Darkroom" will feature some of Constance Bannister's best and unseen work. "Bannister Babies," photographs of children usually accompanied by amusing captions, will be the focus of the exhibit. Also on display will be selections of her photographs featured in Life magazine and the Saturday Evening Post, a few self portraits, a collage of her favorite baby picture, and other surprises. Those attending will also be able to see Constance Bannister's cameras, and a doll "The Bannister Baby." Everyone will be presented with an original copy of her 1953 book, "We Were Spies Behind The Iron Curtain" from the Bannister archives.
In the 1970's through the 1990's, Constance Bannister began to explore the abstract in her photography and painting. These never before seen images of human-like fruits and vegetables and abstract images will also be on display.
Constance Bannister's photographs have been seen in the Chicago Tribune, McCalls, Woman's Day, and many others. The Perry Como Show, The Jack Parr Show, and the Frank Sinatra show, to name a few, showcased her work frequently. "Bannister Babies" were frequently featured in ad-campaigns for Pampers, Johnson & Johnson Baby Shampoo, Claps Baby Food, and Beechnut. Constance Bannister has also published books such as "How I Photograph Babies and Pets," What to Expect When You're Expecting," "A Child's Grace." and many more.

GLEN WEXLER’S “FANTASTIC VOYAGE” PHOTOGRAPHY EXHIBITION COMES
TO THE ARCLIGHT CINEMAS HOLLYWOOD
APRIL 1 – MAY 2, 2008
Los Angeles, (March 12, 2008) Glen Wexler’s photography exhibition, “Fantastic Voyage,” April 1 thru May 2, 2008, at the ArcLight Cinemas Hollywood is a retrospective of popular culture images including works originally commissioned for album covers, magazine editorials, advertising and celebrity portraits. Stripped of the original commercial context the images often defy the boundaries of the photographic medium, art and commerce.
For over 25 years Wexler’s indelible images have straddled the line between art and commerce, and transcended both. According to Eric Idle of Monty Python, Wexler is also, “A seven-foot Scotsman with a wooden leg whom I met Frog Rolling on an Eskimo trip in Northern Greenland.” Believe what you will. That’s the point.
Wexler’s pictures have taken the viewer deep into make-believe worlds that look real. His signature style of “improbable realities” has earned an international client base and the following of photography collectors. “I've always had this notion that there's no such thing as an impossible image,” he says. “That's what drives me to create these credible, hyper-real, and surrealistic photographic narratives that go somewhere unexpected.”
Tim Wride, former curator of photography for the Los Angeles County Museum of Art (LACMA), states, “Wexler’s pictorial constancy as a risk taker and his deftness as a problem solver are the characteristics that distinguish his work and make his images both meaningful and memorable.”
Wexler photographed his first album cover for Quincy Jones Productions while still a student at Art Center College of Design. He quickly gained a reputation for his imaginative and elaborate photo illustrations for Michael Jackson, Van Halen, Rush, Black Sabbath, Yes, ZZ Top and many others. During the mid-1980s Glen’s images began to attract advertising clients. His signature style has earned an international client base including Acura, Sony, Maxell, Adobe, Warner Brothers Pictures and hundreds of others. Wexler also creates feature photo illustrations for TIME magazine.

Domenico Foschi uses brass lenses dating back to the 1860s to create mood
and mysterious imagery in his photographs of Italian architecture and the
countryside. Gus Harper explores a more introspective and thoughtful aspect
in Poetics, a new body of work that expresses the female form. Using pencil,
oil crayon, and acrylic on canvas, Helen Youngblood creates an explosion of
color and energy in her abstract compositions. Victor Zubeldia’s paintings
explore the human form and are visual reflections of a world of questions
and contradictions.

KLOMPCHING GALLERY
is very pleased to announce,
Snowbound,
the upcoming
exhibition of exquisite landscapes by US photographer
Lisa M. Robinson.
January 3—February 29, 2008 | Opening Reception: Thursday, January 10,
6pm—8pm
Photographed over the course of five winters, the landscapes in Snowbound
are pristine in their sparse whiteness. The minimalist compositions have a
meditative quality that causes the spectator to be drawn into the perfected
white-on-white. They exude a neutrality of tone in which the ground recedes
into the sky, mirroring the envelopment of human presence by the binding
snowfall. Accents of color are signs that betray the empty loneliness; they
prick through the whiteness, at times with a surreal incongruity. As quiet
observations of our human condition, these metaphorical studies perceptively
capture notions of transience, loss and enlightenment.
Lisa M. Robinson received her MFA in Photography from the Savannah College
of Art and Design. She has been an Artist-in-Residence at Light Work, was
recently selected as the Evelyn Stefansson Nef Fellow at the MacDowell
Colony and nominated for a Louis Comfort Tiffany Grant.
Snowbound has been exhibited internationally in Argentina, Syria, Lithuania,
Denmark, Uruguay, Chile and Bolivia. Her work is in such collections as the
Museum of Fine Arts in Houston, Museum of Photographic Arts in San Diego,
Ogden Museum of Southern Art and Fidelity Investments.
A monograph of Snowbound was published by Kehrer Verlag in November 2007,
with signed copies available during the exhibition.

Rock Meets Academia in International Concept Album Art Competition
http://www.WordsWithoutVoices.com
Atlantis Found Publishing Inc. announces the launch of "WORDS WITHOUT VOICES" Online Album Art Competition. The contest seeks digital visual artwork submissions to illustrate the titles of 25 Songbook Jackets and 125 Album covers by lyricist James Thomas Fielding.
The contest is limited to the U.S. , Canada and the U.K. Final deadline for the competition is August 31, 2007.
The juried art competition, which seeks to establish a new multimedia artform based on rock "Concept Albums," offers $6,000 in cash prizes to be awarded to three finalists in two categories: Best Songbook Jacket and Best Album Jacket.
The public will select the winners by voting online at the contest website.
The "WORDS WITHOUT VOICES" series combines Art, Music, Language, and Internet Technology, and will be aimed toward the youth market, especially college art instructors and students who study Advertising, Visual Arts, English, Graphic Design, Multimedia, Music, and Web Design.
Fielding says "WORDS WITHOUT VOICES" is not so much an attempt to resurrect the concept album as to preserve and explore its possibilities as a viable artform.
"The release of The Beatles' Sgt. Pepper'sLonely Hearts Club Band in 1967 should have signaled the beginning of a new era in album composition," says Fielding, "instead it was a rare high point in a field more interested in making money than exploring art. In the 40 years since Sgt. Pepper's release, modern rock has been limited enormously by formula formats and commercialism. Staples of yesteryear such as concept albums and rock operas, like The Who's Tommy, Hair, and Jesus Christ Superstar, are rare today,"
According to Fielding, Green Day's American Idiot is a good recent example of the "concept album," even though it wasn't marketed as such.
Fielding is seeking artwork to illustrate his Songbook and Album covers, which range from country, gospel, and progressive rock to death metal..
While the contest is open to "anyone who is creative," state contest restrictions apply. Entry fees are $10 for one entry in one category, $15 to enter both, and $5 apiece for each subsequent submission. All entries will be displayed in the GALLERY OF THE MIND'S EYE at www.WordsWithoutVoices.com
J.T. Fielding is a conceptual artist, freelance writer, rock critic, lyricist, singer, songwriter and musician. He has produced over 500 musical compositions and 5,000 song titles in a 35-year career

CONTINUING EXHIBITS
Joseph Allen Popp
Erie artist Joseph Allen Popp exhibits thirteen of his recent works. His color digital photomontages feature iconic images from across cultural boundaries. The figures and objects bring to mind cut-and-paste collage with the edge of digital manipulation, combined in a surreal symmetrical world. Louviere+Vanessa: Slumberland
