BEHAVIOUR OF ART ETHOLOGY
E T H O L O G Y
ETHOLOGY: Originally a branch of zoology, ethology argues that certain types of human behaviour are innate genetic developments that had survival value in evolutionary terms. Some of these ideas are creeping into aesthetics in the form of a supposedly universal "behaviour of art," a kind of investment of value and meaning in what is otherwise valueless and meaningless by means of play and ritual. This supposedly ensures the survival of the organism by the process of making special. Ellen Dissanayake's What is Art For? (see definitions of art) is the only lengthy study to attempt this approach.
